The Slovenian Museum of Natural History

The Slovenian Museum of Natural History has the same rich past as the National Museum of Slovenia . They are even located in the same building. Part of the exhibition of the Natural History Museum was taken from the National Museum. Visitors are presented with various samples demonstrating changes in natural sciences and biology.

What is interesting about the museum?

In the modern building, which was built by Viennese architect Wilhelm Resorie and foreman Wilhelm Treo of Ljubljana , the museum has been located since 1885. It contains many interesting collections and exhibits, among which you can list the following:

  1. The main symbol of the museum of natural history is the well-preserved skeleton of a mammoth, found in 1938 near Kamnik.
  2. In 2005, among the exhibits appeared another skeleton - a young female finvala (whale). He was found in 2003 on the Slovenian coast. The exhibit has become part of the exhibition since autumn 2011.
  3. The Slovenian Museum of Natural History attracts tourists' attention also with a large exposition of natural resources. They were collected from different parts of the country, among the exhibits is the skeleton of a mustachioed whale.
  4. One of the important collections of the museum is the mineral, which began to be collected by Sigmund Zois, an outstanding historian. Among the exhibits there is a mineral named in his honor. Here you can also see shells of mollusks.
  5. A lot of attention is paid to birds, reptiles and mammals that live in Slovenia.

Information for tourists

The Slovenian Museum of Natural History is open from 10:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Sunday, and only on Thursday the institution closes at 20:00. Non-working days are days of public holidays. The museum holds seminars for children, during which children are introduced to the environment.

There is a shop where you can buy an original souvenir for friends. Make a photo or video without the permission of the head of the museum is impossible. As the museum has several entrances, each of them is planned for the needs of certain people. For example, for wheelchair users there is an entrance from Prešerenova Street.

How to get there?

The museum can be reached by following such attractions as Tivoli Park , the Parliament building and the Opera House. From the center to the museum can be reached on foot, and their other areas can be reached by bus number 18.
