History of the Church of Alexander Nevsky

The Church of Alexander Nevsky in the city of Copenhagen is an Orthodox church in the capital of Denmark , which is under the jurisdiction of the ROCA (Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia). In 1881 - 1883, the Russian Empress Maria Feodorovna (the wife of the All-Russian Emperor Alexander III and the daughter of the King of Denmark) expressed a desire to build a church, after which Russia bought a plot for the construction of a church in Copenhagen for about 300 thousand rubles.

From 1881 to the present time the temple is active and is open for visiting believers and ordinary tourists.

What to see?

One of the architects of the church was David Grimm, it was according to his plan that the temple was created in the Russian-Byzantine style. The church is built with alternating lines of red and white bricks, which gives an interesting architectural element from the very foundation. On the roof of the church to the sky stretch 3 gilded domes with crosses and 6 bells, which weigh neither much nor little - 640 kilograms. The walls at the entrance to the temple are decorated with the text of 120 psalms of the Bible, and on the facade of the building is placed a cross more than two meters high. Under the domes is an icon with the image of Prince Alexander Nevsky.

The interior of the prayer hall consists of a mosaic marble tile that creates a drawing. Walls and other structures inside the halls are decorated with a complex gilt ornament. Crosses, paintings and censer are original and some of the things were donated to the church personally by kings, which makes these items very valuable. The walls of the room are hung with ordinary paintings on a religious theme, not to mention the many old and very well-preserved icons. The two most important of them are the icon of the Blessed Virgin, or as it is also called "Crying". Also, be sure to pay attention to the icon of Alexander Nevsky, in honor of which the church is named.

In our time there is a library and even a Sunday school. Sometimes a congress of young people from other cities is held here, in which the younger generation participates in conversations with clergymen.
