The Gafion Fountain

The Gafion Fountain is located in the harbor of Copenhagen and is one of the main attractions of Denmark . This impressive monument of the late nineteenth century, located near the star-shaped city citadel Castellet in the park Langelinia , which also houses the world-famous monument to the Little Mermaid . It was presented to the city by Carlsberg in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the brewery. Originally planned to build a fountain in the central square of Copenhagen in front of the Town Hall , but then it was decided to install it in the park at the present place.

Fountain description

The architect and artist Andreas Bundgaard created the central figures of Gefion for two years from 1897 to 1899, and the decoration of the pedestal together with the pool was completed in 1908. The fountain was first included on July 14, 1908. Further in 1999, the restoration work began, which ended only in the fall of 2004.

A massive monument was erected on a three-stage cascade pedestal, located in a shallow basin, and each of the steps is decorated with smooth large stones. The fountain is a beautiful statue in the form of the goddess of fertility, Gephion, who controls four powerful bulls. Few people know that the scene was immortalized on a rock. About this tells us one of the most interesting Scandinavian legends about the origin of the Danish state and the island of Zealand.
