Nyhavn

One of the main attractions of the capital of Denmark is Copenhagen Port of Nyhavn. In translation from Danish - a new harbor. This channel was built in the 17th century by the order of King Christian V. Its construction was carried out by the forces of Swedish prisoners of war during the period from 1658 to 1660.

More about New Harbor

One of the goals of the construction of the Nyhavn channel in Denmark was to connect the New Royal Square with the Öresund strait for the convenience of unloading merchant ships, another, no less popular version of the canal construction is the desire of the Danish king to enter the ship's deck directly from the palace of Chartottenborg ; however, Nyhavn was rarely used by the Danish kings for going to sea, but as a trading port - regularly performed its functions.

In connection with the increased flow of ships and sailors, the port in a short time turned into one of the hot spots in Copenhagen, where alcoholism, robbery and prostitution flourished; Nyhavna did not like such fame, and after a while (including the development of land routes) the port turned into a pretty place where tourists, city dwellers, street artists and other representatives of creative professions like to spend their time.

Harbor and surroundings

On both sides of the New Harbor in Copenhagen are multi-colored houses, whose age is hardly inferior to the age of the canal itself, and one of them (house No. 9) was built even before the Nyhavna Canal - in 1661. In one of these bright houses in his time lived a world-famous storyteller - G.Kh. Andersen, it was here that many of his works were written.

In 1875, the first bridge was built over Denmark's Nyhavn Canal, which in 1912 was replaced by a more modern bridge, by the way, this bridge is a drawbridge, so sometimes there are congestions at the entrance of sailboats to the harbor.

In 1951, the New Harbor in Copenhagen was decorated with an anchor sculpture, installed in honor of the Danish seamen who died in the Second World War. During the war he was on the ship Fyn (the name from the island of Funen , which is part of Denmark), which took part in military operations in the Baltic, so that its appearance on the harbor is very symbolic. Every year on May 5, this memorial is held a ceremony in honor of the liberation of the country.

Along the Nyhavna can be found many cafes, restaurants , taverns, many of them serve the visitors around the clock. Despite the high enough prices, visitors do not hang up at any time of year and day, because only here you can enjoy the most picturesque area of the city. Property prices in the Nyhavna harbor area are considered to be among the highest in the country, only very well-off people can buy an apartment in one of the colored houses.
