Thorvaldsen Museum

The Thorvaldsen Museum is one of the most famous sights not only of Copenhagen , but of the whole of Denmark . It is an art museum dedicated to the work of the outstanding Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. There is a museum next to the residence of the Danish kings - Christiansborg . The rectangular building has an inner courtyard in which Torvaldsen's grave is located.

The museum is notable not only for its extensive collection of Torvaldsen sculptures, it is also the first museum in Copenhagen opened in Denmark. Today, it not only allows you to admire the perfect works of art: painting lessons and graphics are also held here, and besides it is used for various cultural events.

History of the Museum

Bertel Thorvaldsen spent 40 years in Rome, and in 1838 decided to return to his homeland. A year before his return, the sculptor gave his native country all his works, as well as a collection of paintings. In Denmark, it was decided to create a museum dedicated to the famous compatriot. The site for the building next to the royal residence was allotted according to a special decree of King Frederick VI (the royal carriage court used to be on this site), and money was raised for the construction of the museum as far back as 1837 - donations were made by the royal court, the commune of Copenhagen and individual citizens.

It is worth noting that the royal frigate Rota was sent to the sculptor and his works in Livorno, and when he arrived the sculptor met all Copenhagen without exaggeration. The students who participated in the meeting unharnessed the horses from the sculptor's carriage and carried the carriage to the royal palace in half a town. Scenes depicting the enthusiastic reception, rendered by the Danes to the famous compatriot, is depicted in the frescoes that adorn the exterior walls of the museum. The author of the frescoes is Jergen Sonne. In addition, here you can see portraits of people who played a significant role in the creation of the museum and in the life of the master.

The building was erected according to the project of the young architect Bindesbell, whose candidature was chosen by Torvaldsen himself. The sculptor himself did not live a week before the opening of his museum: he died on March 24, 1844.

Exposition of the museum

The museum exposition includes sculptures, drawings and graphic works of Bertel Thorvaldsen, as well as his personal belongings (including clothing, household items and tools with which he created his works), his library and collections of coins, musical instruments, bronze and glass products, art objects. In the museum there are more than twenty thousand exhibits.

Marble and plaster sculptures are located on the first floor of the two-storey building. The exposition is very original: the placement of one monumental sculpture in one room allows to concentrate the attention of visitors on every concrete work.

Pictures are placed on the second floor. In the basement, in addition to the services of the museum, there is also an exposition telling about the process of sculpture sculpture. Noteworthy and decoration of the premises - the floors are lined with colored mosaics, and the shelves are decorated with patterns made in the Pompeian style.
