Tivoli Park (Ljubljana)

Tivoli Park is located in the north-western part of Ljubljana in Slovenia . It covers an area of ​​5 km², extends from the district of Shishka to the district of Rozhnik. The park is remarkable for its picturesque nature, incredibly beautiful landscape and architectural monuments located on its territory.

Tivoli Park (Ljubljana) - history and description

The first plans for the creation of the park were pronounced in 1813, when Ljubljana was still the administrative center of the autonomous French provinces. At that time the park connected two park territories, a green zone around the castle of Tivoli (Podturn Manor) and the territory near the Tsekin mansion. The park acquired its current name only in the 19th century during the companies of Napoleon and was supplemented by a summer residence, as well as an amusement park, a bar and a cafe.

In 1880 in Tivoli Park an artificial rectangular pond was excavated, into which fish was introduced, and in winter this area was intended for skating. In 1894, the park was created arboretum, it was engaged in the famous Czech gardener Vaclav Heinik. In 1920 the park underwent a huge reconstruction under the guidance of Yozhe Plechnik. In the park were created wonderful alleys, many bright flowerbeds, numerous sculptures, arbours for holidaymakers, fountains, playgrounds and a concert hall.

In the garden are also built facilities for sports, this is the summer pool "Illyria", the Palace of Sports "Tivoli", shady courts, basketball courts and an indoor swimming pool with a gym. There are also many playgrounds, a large botanical garden and a greenhouse.

Features of the park

Tivoli Park, whose photo is not capable of conveying all its beauty, has many interesting attractions, including the following:

  1. The main attraction of the park is Tivoli Castle , which was built in the 17th century on the ruins of the previous structure. In the middle of the 19th century the castle acquired a modern look, its owner, Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky, rebuilt the castle in neoclassical style. Before the castle there is a flowerbed and a fountain, four dogs that are cast from cast iron, they were created by the Australian sculptor Anton Fernkorn. These artificial dogs look in different directions and guard the territory. Now, the castle is the International Center for Graphic Arts, which presents a lot of works of modern artists.
  2. On the territory of the park there is a mansion called Zekin , it was built in 1720 by the architect Fisher von Erlach. Since 1951 the building has been used under the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia.
  3. The Tivoli Sports Palace also became a historical landmark of the park. It consists of two multi-purpose indoor sports arenas. The palace was opened in 1965, it has a large ice arena where 7 thousand people can be accommodated during hockey matches, and the basketball hall can accommodate up to 4,500 people.
  4. There is a small zoo in the park that attracts many tourists. There are antelopes, giraffes, bears, surrits. You can also see elephants, wild boars, deer, kangaroos and other animals that can not be found in nature at the same time.
