Lake Prespa


One of the most romantic places in Macedonia is Lake Prespa. The reservoir is located in the south-western part of the country, near the Albanian and Greek borders. In addition to an impressive age (about 5 million years), the lake attracts tourists with a rich flora and picturesque landscapes. Once here, any person forgets about personal problems, and begins to feel a unity with nature. Another feature of this lake is the neighborhood with Ohrid Lake - the national treasure of Macedonia. Thus, you will be able to visit the territory of two ancient lakes.

Few facts

Prespa is a system of freshwater lakes, consisting of a small Prespa and a large Prespa. A reservoir of tectonic origin was formed in the Pliocene epoch (about 5 million years ago). Prespa is comfortably located on the border of such countries of South-Eastern Europe as Albania, Greece and Macedonia. According to the agreement of these three states, Prespa is a national heritage, therefore it is guarded by the water protection. The greater part of the lake (190 km²) belongs to the Republic of Macedonia . Prespa can rightfully be called a mountain lake. it is located at an altitude of 853 m above sea level.

Flora and fauna of the lake are endemic. The main endemic of the green world is the plant community Lemneto-Spirodeletum polyrrhize aldrovandetosum. More than 80% of fish in the lake are also endemic.

Interesting fact

On the territory of the lake there is a single Macedonian island, called Golem Grad (in translation from Macedonian - a large city). Once it was the residence of the Bulgarian king Samuel.

How to get to Prespa?

There are several ways to get to Prespa. In the first variant the path lies through the city of Ohrid and the national park Galichitsu , which, by the way, is certainly recommended to visit. Thus, you will travel about 70 km, and in time it will take a little more than an hour. In the warm season there is an opportunity to cut the road to the lake. The point "A" is still Ohrid, but you will have to go on the route number 501. The path will consist of 40 km, and will not take as much time as the first option.
