Plaoshnik


In the forests of Macedonia , on one of the shores of Lake Ohrid , lies Plaoshnik - a giant site on which archaeological excavations are conducted. A significant part of the territory of Plaeshnik is occupied by the monastery of St. Panteleimon, which was reconstructed by archaeologists using original drawings of this ancient structure. Today, painstaking work is under way to restore the building of the first Slavic University. Ohrid University

Recently, in preparation for the reconstruction of another valuable building, Ohrid University, began on the territory of Plaoshnik. In fact, the university was Ohrid School, working at the monastery and teaching those who want to read and write. It was in this building that the first Macedonian writer, Clement of Ohrid, worked on his works, which are considered masterpieces of the Slavic writing of the Middle Ages.

After the restoration works in the new building will open a large library that stores unique works of the Middle Ages and a gallery of icons.

Church of St. Clement

Originally, the place of the current monastery was occupied by the Church of St. Clement of Ohrid, which was the oldest building of Plaosnik. At one time the temple was the center of culture and religion. It is known for sure that schools were organized in the church, in which hundreds of children were trained and brought up. After graduating, graduates went to wander around the state and carried enlightenment to the masses, teaching peasants writing.

Unfortunately, the church was destined for a tragic fate. The ruling Ottomans destroyed the temple, and in its place the mosque was rebuilt. In this difficult time for the country, many religious and artistic values ​​were destroyed or completely lost.

Revival of the church took up only in 2000. Restoration work was organized by the Ohrid Institute and the National Museum and attracted hundreds of first-class specialists from all over the world. The result was a magnificent church of St. Panteleimon, which is an exact copy of the Church of St. Clement. The architects managed to recreate the building in the smallest details, and even the interiors were the same as many years ago.

The peculiarity of the monastery is the glass floor, which allows you to see the surviving ruins of the church of St. Clement. And you can also study the marble sarcophagus, which stores the relics of St. Clement.

In general, Plaeshnik is a historical center and an important landmark of one of the oldest spa towns in Macedonia Ohrid . To find it is simple enough, for this purpose it is necessary to move along the street of Kuzmana Kapidan, passing in small street Kaneo Plaoshnik Pateka.
