Ruins of Gedi

Based on the data obtained during archaeological excavations, Gedi is one of the oldest city in Kenya , founded presumably in the 13th century AD and existed before the 17th century. Unfortunately, the city went into oblivion without leaving any documentary evidence of its life, but the excavations that took place in the territory of Gedi from 1948 to 1958 confirm that the city not only had its place, but also served as an important trade hub. In the markets and bazaars you could buy expensive fabrics, various weapons, jewelry, items needed in everyday life. It should be noted that trade was conducted not only with neighboring cities, but also by major states such as China, India, Spain, etc.

City yesterday and today

The studies proved that there was a beautiful mosque on the territory of the ancient city, a beautiful palace, and the streets of Gedi were built up by small stone houses with bathrooms and toilets. City streets were erected at right angles and were equipped with drainage gutters. Wells have been equipped everywhere, supplying the city residents with drinking water.

Today, tourists can see the remains of the central city gate, the almost destroyed palace and the foundation of the Gedi Mosque. All these structures are made of coral reefs, mined on the ocean floor.
