Planetarium of Johannesburg


South Africa received the planetarium not so long ago, in October of the sixtieth year of the 20th century. This educational and educational institution was founded on the basis of the University of Witwatersrand. It is located on its Eastern Campus in the central suburb of Johannesburg (Bramfontein).

Window to the universe

The planetarium is considered the first full-sized in South Africa and the second in the entire Southern Hemisphere. It is now the oldest on the African continent. It is equipped with a telescope with Zeiss optics MkIII. The diameter of the dome is 20 meters. The area of ​​the room allows you to admire the stars at the same time four hundred amateur astronomers.

When the university administration thought about building its own planetarium, it had no idea what a building should be like. Therefore, after a short debate, funds were collected for the purchase of a ready-made planetarium. The choice fell on the Habsburg, built in 1930.

The building was exactly copied from the original. He was staffed with a modern telescope.
