Museum of Marrakech

Marrakech is one of the oldest cities in Morocco , once its capital. And most of the local sights are somehow connected with the history of Marrakech. The most popular among tourists are Kutubiya Mosque , Saadit Tombs , Menara Gardens , El-Badi Palace , etc. But if you want to really understand this country, plunge into its atmosphere, take time to hike in the Museum of Marrakech.

The attraction is located in the center of the old city, in the building of the palace of Dar Denebhi, which is a traditional building in the Andalusian style. Outside, it is decorated with a single carved door leading to a spacious patio with three swimming pools, a fountain and places for relaxation. But the interior of the palace is very unusual. The floor, walls and columns of the central atrium are decorated with Moroccan mosaic ("zelij"). Two lateral wings of the building go to the sides, where the exhibits of the museum are located. Attracts the attention of a huge metal chandelier in the atrium.

What to see in the Museum of Marrakech?

The museum has two permanent exhibitions. Samples of modern art are in one wing of the palace. Here you can see the works of Oriental artists, originals of engravings of Moroccan themes and much more. The exhibition is often replenished with new works of art. Also often there are thematic exhibitions of handicrafts by masters of Marrakech - sculptors, artists and photographers, and concerts, creative evenings and lectures are held in the central patio (patio).

The second exposition deserves special attention - antiquities. Among the most valuable exhibits is the Koran from China, dating from the 12th century, a rare specimen of the Sufi prayer book (XIX century), Moroccan coins of various times, beginning with the Idrisid era (IX century). Among the museum antiques you can also see Berber doors, Tibetan clothes, pieces of furniture, decorations and ceramics made in the XVII-XVIII centuries and much more. Visiting the museum leaves a pleasant impression and allows you to better acquaint yourself with the history and culture of Morocco. It will be interesting for both adults and children, as an alternative to traditional recreation by the pool. At the same time, many travelers note the scarcity of the exposition (compared, for example, with European museums), and much more praise the architectural beauty of the building.

At the museum there is a cafe of national cuisine , where you can treat yourself to delicious coffee or mint tea, to taste local sweetness - a bagel with a filling from marzipan.
