National Gallery (Kingston)

The National Gallery of Jamaica, founded in 1974, is by far the oldest open art museum in the English-speaking part of the Caribbean. The gallery has collected in itself works of both local and foreign sculptors and artists. There are works of early, modern and modern art, a significant part of which is a permanent exhibition of the gallery. In addition to regular exhibitions in the National Gallery of Jamaica, there are also temporary (seasonal) exhibitions presenting the work of young artists, as well as exhibitions of works by foreign masters.

Artists and expositions of the gallery

The National Gallery of Jamaica is divided into 10 expositions, assembled in chronological order. Most of them are on the 1st floor of the building. In the first halls there are sculptures, carvings of Indians, art objects and paintings of more eminent authors, in the last halls there are works of contemporary artists united by the course "The Art of Jamaica for the inhabitants of Jamaica".

The pride of the collection of the National Gallery of Jamaica are the ceramics of Cecil Bo, the sculptures of the author Edna Manley, the works of such artists as Albert Artwell, David Pottinger, Karl Abrahams and many others.

The gallery regularly hosts educational programs, including special classes for children and tours with a guide. And every even year there is a large-scale event attracting a huge number of visitors - the National Biennale.
