Ben Youssef Madrasah


In one of the magical colorful cities of Morocco is the amazing, the most ancient landmark of the country - Madrasah Ben Youssef. It was with her that the construction of a large city began, in which she was located. If you look at Marrakech from a bird's eye view, you can see that all of its streets form circles around the Madrasah of Ben Youssef. Nowadays such an attractive sight became the most important historical monument and a fine museum, but, unfortunately, only Muslims can visit it. People of other faiths have to admire only the exquisite appearance of Madrasah Ben Youssef.

What is inside?

Initially, the Madrasah of Ben Youssef was the usual Muslim school, which was built by Sultan Abdul-Hasan Ali First. After the first construction, this landmark was reconstructed more than once, it acquired its last appearance in 1960, when it ceased to bear its original role. After the last reconstruction, the school has become a museum, which can only be visited by Muslims.

In the center of the madrasah there is a large rectangular basin, in which the ablution was carried out earlier. Around it were two tiers with 107 rooms, in which lived the monks or teachers. All rooms are connected by long corridors. There is a small courtyard in the Ben Youssef Madrasah, whose walls are adorned with a beautiful picturesque gallery. The building itself is made in a beautiful Islamic style. Its painted stunning arches, columns and mosaics are admired by all visiting the museum. Outside, the Madrasah looks no less picturesque than inside.
