South African National Gallery


The governmental avenue of Cape Town is adorned by the South African National Gallery, which has collected works of art from the Dutch, French, British, African peoples. History

The South African National Gallery began its work more than 150 years ago, when in 1872, part of the personal gatherings and savings of a local wealthy man - Thomas Butterworth was transferred to the municipality. Earlier, in October 1850, a proposal was made to create a gallery that could carry out exhibitions of arts. The Association of Fine Arts began to search for permanent premises. In 1875 at the address of Victoria Street was bought a building, which soon and housed the South African National Gallery.

The modern building of the gallery was built much later, the official opening took place only in November 1930. A huge contribution to the development of the national gallery, the formation of its funds were made by Alfred de Pass, Abe Bailey, Lady Michaelis, Edmund and Lady Davis.

Since 1937 the building of the South African National Gallery began to expand, as the exposition was supplemented by the works of local artists, the historical things of Africans, ritual masks, weapons, ornaments.
