Open arm fracture

A fracture of the hand is an injury to one or more of her bones (ulnar, radial, humerus, pastern, or wrist). Open is called a fracture of the hand, in which the bone fragments tear muscle tissue and skin and come out. Such fractures usually occur with trauma of large, tubular bones (radial, ulnar, brachial).

First aid with open fracture of arm

An open arm fracture is always a fracture with a displacement of bone fragments that disrupt the integrity of surrounding tissues, and as a result an open wound arises. With such a fracture, there is bleeding, sometimes severe, which can threaten the life of the victim, and in addition, there is a high probability of traumatic shock . Consider what it is necessary to do first of all with an open fracture of the arm:

  1. If possible, treat the wound with an antiseptic and apply a sterile bandage.
  2. In case of severe bleeding, apply a tourniquet. With open extremity fractures, arterial bleeding is most often observed, in which the tourniquet should be applied above the wound.
  3. Give the patient an anesthetic.
  4. Fix the broken limb with a tire to avoid further displacement of the bone fragments, and deliver the victim as soon as possible to the hospital.

Treatment of open fracture of the hand

Unlike closed fractures, open, in order to avoid complications, and in the future completely restore the function of the limb, require mandatory surgical intervention. In addition to combining bone fragments, the operation involves the sewing of damaged tissues, the restoration of ruptured vessels. Also, the nature of these fractures often requires the use of special spokes or plates to fix the broken bone.

In the future, a langet is superimposed on the hand, which in this case should leave the possibility of access to the wound surface for the treatment of joints. Since open fractures are often high risk of infection of the wound, the patient is prescribed antibiotics.

The period of treatment and rehabilitation with open fractures is usually longer than with closed injuries.
