The Reykjavik Art Museum

Iceland is an unusual and beautiful country. Every year, tens of thousands of travelers come here not only to admire the famous Icelandic landscapes, but also to learn more about the culture and traditions of local people. We offer our acquaintance with the country with Reykjavik - the capital and the largest city of the state. It is here that the best sights and the most interesting museums are concentrated, one of which we will discuss further.

The Art Museum is the main attraction of Reykjavik

The Reykjavik Art Museum is the largest museum in the city. It occupies just 3 rooms:

  1. Kjarvalsstaðir. The first museum, opened in 1973. It is named after Johannes Kjärval, one of the most famous Icelandic artists. Most of the collection is the work of the author and works of the XX century. In addition to the permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions of young artists from other countries are also held on the territory of the museum. The Kjarvalsstaðir building is surrounded by a luxurious park and is within walking distance of the center of Reykjavik.
  2. Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum. This museum was founded 10 years later, in 1983, in a house where once lived the brilliant Icelandic sculptor Ausmundur Sveinsson. The whole collection is dedicated to the life and work of this unique man, and the most famous of his works are exhibited not only in the museum, but throughout the country.
  3. Hafnarhús. The latest museum of the complex of the Reykjavik Art Museum, which was opened in April 2000. Initially, the walls of the building housed harbor warehouses, which are the historical heritage of Iceland, so the architecture of this place was kept as much as possible. The Hafnarhús Museum includes 6 galleries, a courtyard and a large hall where all the cultural events of the city take place, from rock concerts to thematic evenings of reading.

The Reykjavik Art Museum, in addition to the main function, also performs educational: more than 20 free excursions for children and schoolchildren are held every year, the purpose of which is to teach the younger generation to think outside the box and understand art.
