Free Reykjavik Church

The most visited city, the magic of Iceland , is its capital - the city of Reykjavik . Despite the rather modest size (the population currently stands at about 120,000 people), there are a lot of unique sights and interesting places, one of which is the Free Church of Reykjavik (Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík) - we will tell more about it.

What to see?

It is worth noting that this ancient building was built in 1901 in the heart of the city, on the shores of the picturesque Lake Tjornin. The name of the temple was given not by chance: more than 100 years ago, parishioners of the church did not agree with the state church of Iceland and separated from it, forming their small community. Today this place is very popular both among local residents, and among numerous tourists.

The main feature of the Reykjavik Free Church is the tall pointed spire of the tower, which is visible within a radius of 10 kilometers. The building itself looks inconspicuous and rather modest. As for the interior, the most important element of the temple is considered to be a luxurious body. By the way, here often there are not only concerts of symphonic music, but also performances of local rock and pop musicians.

Everyone can go up to the very top of the bell tower, from where a breathtaking view of the surroundings opens. It can be done absolutely free of charge, and an amazing spectacle will remain for many years in memory.

How to visit?

You can get to the Free Church of Reykjavik by car or by public transport - you should go to the bus stop Fríkirkjuvegur. The entrance for all citizens is free, however please note that the temple is open Monday to Thursday from 9.00 to 16.00. Have a nice trip!
