Venetian plaster with own hands

Venetian stucco perfectly imitates glossy marble surface, and has high humidity, which allows it to be used even in the bathroom or pool . It is able to reproduce the glow of natural material and effectively looks on the walls. We will try to tell you the basics that will be useful for a beginner master plasterer who works for the first time with this decorative coating.

Venetian plaster - master class

  1. First of all, you need to buy either a ready-made stucco compound or a dry mix. In any case, it is necessary to give preference to the material from a quality well-known manufacturer.
  2. To give different effects, you will certainly need additional special materials - finish-varnish, acrylic lacquer, a special water-resistant wax, glossing pearl composition. If you want to do something special, you will need to buy decorative additives (for simulating silver, gold, other precious metals), enamel of different colors, and water-dispersed paint.
  3. In addition to materials, you need to pick up a special tool for work - spatulas (of different sizes), structural rollers, hammer, trowel, graters, water tanks, nozzle for mixing mortar, rags, trowel, polishing machine, drill, stencils.
  4. Process and level the walls with putty, and apply a primer layer on them. Approximately in 12 hours it will be possible to proceed to the next stage.
  5. Treat the walls with a covering primer, which increases the adhesion properties of the surface. The primer is desirable to take color, its color should be approximately similar to the one that we want to impart to our Venetian plaster.
  6. We apply the composition evenly with a roller and give the covering primer time to dry up (1-2 hours), then gently scrape the surface with a spatula.
  7. We prepare the material for work. First, add a concentrated colorant to the white plaster and mix the composition with a drill with a nozzle. To obtain a solution of a homogeneous color, it is necessary to treat it with a mixer for about 3-4 minutes. Quality plaster after drying does not change its color, and do not pre-paint. It is almost never possible to achieve the same color by re-mixing the components, the shade will be different, and stand out on the wall. Therefore, make a solution with a small margin, so that it is enough to handle the entire surface.
  8. The technology of applying a ready-made mortar is not a very complicated process, Venetian plaster, like other similar compounds, is adjusted with a spatula or trowel. Cover the "under the stone" you need to perform a minimum of two layers. We try not to leave traces of the initial contact of the instrument with the working surface. Depending on how moist the atmosphere is in the room, the plaster dries in about 1-2 hours. This process is repeated once more, carrying out the second layer of plaster.
  9. Finally, you can apply the last third layer, it should be thin, almost translucent.
  10. After 30-60 minutes we proceed to a very delicate work - ironing, giving a plastered surface glossy luster. It is necessary with a noticeable effort to conduct on the plastered surface, as if producing its polishing. At this moment, her drawing begins to really manifest. Direct the movements of the spatula in the same way as when applying the working solution. The main thing here is not to scratch the surface, it is almost impossible to fix such defects.
  11. How to make Venetian plaster resistant to moisture? After about 24 hours a special wax can be applied to the surface. This is done with a trowel or spatula. The wax layer should be thin, otherwise it will eventually lag behind the wall or crack.
  12. An hour later, you can start polishing. The nozzle should be gentle, and the speed of its rotation should not exceed 3000 rpm, otherwise the gentle wax can burn. Grind the wall until the surface becomes absolutely smooth and glossy as much as possible. Completely wax dries in two weeks.
  13. On this our master class, how to do Venetian plaster, can be considered finished. All the works are done, lead the guests to admire the beautiful and shiny surface into which you turned your usual walls.
