What to see in Saransk?

Located in the Republic of Mordovia of the Russian Federation, the city of Saransk is located on the bank of the river Insar. The year of foundation of the city is 1641. It was in this year that a fortress was laid in the southeast of the Russian kingdom, which was named after the Saransk island. However, by the beginning of the 18th century, the fortress had decayed and deteriorated. Therefore Saransk lost its military importance and eventually developed as a handicraft and trading city. One of the significant events was the visit of the city Emelian Pugachev during the uprising in the summer of 1774.

A large number of sights of Saransk were destroyed by multiple fires, since almost all the buildings in the city until the XX century were wooden. But even in spite of the fact that there are very few historical monuments in the city, there is something to see and what to spare in Saransk.
