World Fisheries Day

Fisheries are hard work. This is not at all usual fishing for us, arranged mainly in order to gather with friends and have fun. Real serious fishing requires strength, skill and a lot of time, therefore it is not surprising that there is an official, UN-recognized holiday - World Fisheries Day.

A bit of history

Fisheries are known to mankind since ancient times. In areas where it was impossible to breed cattle, people ate fish - this was the case in North America, the Far East of present-day Russia , Alaska and Scandinavia. Of course, this occupation has firmly become part of the way of life and culture of such peoples.

Now fishing is one of the most popular hobbies of mankind. It is described in many literary masterpieces such as "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway or "The Sea Workers" by Victor Hugo. They show the severity of this work, the dangers that lie in wait for fishermen on the high seas.

Long since fishing has been not only a hobby, but also a means of survival - so it remains here and there and so far. Therefore it is important to pay special attention to it, which is being done recently.

June 27 - World Fisheries Day

The date of the World Fisheries Day is June 27. On this day various competitions are held with awards even at the level of the authorities, as well as training seminars, where anyone can learn the basics of fishing. It is worth noting that gradually the pleasure from this lesson began to be shared by women who also take part in the celebration. Organizations engaged in fishing prepare reports on the work in this sector.

The festival is also due to the International Conference on the Regulation and Development of Fisheries: it was then, in 1984, in Rome, a decision was made to create a formal World Fisheries Day.

It is interesting that Fisherman's Day and Fishing Day are different holidays, celebrated on different days. Fishermen's holidays are professional, recognized only in some countries, while the Fishing Day is a holiday for all, professionals and amateurs.

A little bit about fishing

This occupation, which occupies an important place in the field of modern agriculture, for some is not just a job or a pleasant hobby, but a whole life - a hobby that has grown into passion. People are ready to fish in any weather, regardless of possible inconveniences, and wait for hours. They climb into the most secluded corners to see or feel the biting of the fish. And the hero of the above-mentioned story "The Old Man and the Sea", for example, was so carried away by the hunt for giant fish that he almost died, trying to catch and keep a large prey.

And the UN is paying more attention to fishing. Thus, at one of the meetings it was established that a person began to consume much more fish than even last year. And, besides, the number of fishermen has also increased dramatically.

Yes, in this century, an acute need for fishing for survival has almost disappeared. But, nevertheless, fishing, besides mass hobby and still the necessary sphere of economy, is also a fairly large business. In all seaside towns we can visit a cafe where it is offered to try local fish, this product is widely used by people in all corners of the Earth. We see fish in any market and in every store in every city.

Even without being carried away and having nothing to do with fishing, one should respect this hard work and understand what kind of work the fishermen do every day. True fishing is invariably associated with the dangers of the sea and long, painstaking work. Therefore, on June 27, the World Fisheries Day, it is worth considering what is behind the portion of delicious fish that we regularly see on our table.
