A pump or pump is one of the most necessary devices for an aquarium. With its help, a dwelling for underwater inhabitants is filled with water. The pump also serves to create the necessary pressure while the external filter is working in the aquarium. And if you put a special foam sponge on the pump, then this pump can be used for mechanical cleaning of the aquarium. Therefore, the pump is a device that combines both the compressor and the filter. The main thing in taking care of such a pump is regularly and in time to wash the sponge-filters. And so that the pump does not become clogged quickly, turn it off while feeding the fish. And about an hour after the end of their meal, the pump can be turned on again.
Another important point in using the pump is that the pump should work as quietly as possible. Many fans of fish note the very noisy operation of aquarium compressors, and the pump can be noiseless. This is its main advantage over the compressor. Today there are pomp of various brands from different manufacturers on sale. For example, the silent pump EheimCompakt 600 is used to increase and enhance the circulation of water in the aquarium. Due to the small size of this universal pump, it can easily be masked by aquarium vegetation. This pump is easy to maintain.
In addition to filling the aquarium with water, the pump also performs some other functions:
- creates the flow of water, while using the flow pump, which is necessary for the existence of some underwater living organisms; For example, corals need a strong flow of water, which brings them food (plankton) and takes the products of their vital activity;
- promotes water circulation in the aquarium, in this case, flow pumps are used, as well as special circulation pumps. During such mixing, the water is saturated with oxygen and purified, returning clean and transparent again to the aquarium;
- the air pump in the aquarium is designed to create a continuous flow of air necessary for the operation of the aerator, bottom filter or for other devices. It should be installed above the water level in order to avoid water from entering the aquarium.
Installing the pump in the aquarium
Depending on where the pump is located in the aquarium, its functions can be different. The pumps differ from each other in the installation method and there are three types:
- internal;
- external;
- universal.
The internal pump is installed in an aquarium, and it can only be used when immersed in water, and external pumps are attached outside the container with water. But most often the pumps are made universal, they can be installed inside and outside the water tank. To fix the pump both inside and outside, various adaptations are used, for example, suckers, special fixatives and so on.

To choose the right pump, you must first of all know the volume of the aquarium, and also decide what the pump will be used for.
