In the 30-40 years of the 19th century, fashion legislators were not only England and France, but also Germany and Austria. It was from Germany that the style of Biedermeier in clothing was borrowed. He provided, in the first place, what the women of fashion of that time did not have. It's about comfort, security, simplicity and functionality in clothes at the same time.
Biedermeier in clothes
The style of Biedermeier in clothes mostly touched a woman's dress. In the days of Empire style , a dress without a waist was especially popular. Of course, such a model was practical and convenient, but with all these advantages it did not emphasize the female figure. That is why in about 1820 the dress underwent cardinal changes. The bodice was stitched, the skirt was somewhat shortened, but the waist was lowered slightly, which gave the figure a greater femininity. And again women of fashion began to resort to the help of corsets.
Over time, the waist on these dresses went lower and lower. In order to visually make it yet, the fashion includes wide sleeves with the spoken name "mutton ham" or "ham". The sleeves were so wide that a whale must be used to maintain their shape.
It is worth noting that the styles of Biedermeier and Romanticism closely intertwine with each other. To the image acquired a special romantic, the girls were forced to whiten their faces. This was considered an aristocratic beauty.
Fashion for Biedermeier excluded women's coats. An alternative to them were warm woolen dresses, just like coats. Again, pearl jewelry, brooches, long earrings, diadems, decorative needles and combs became relevant.
The introduction of the Biedermeier style allowed many ladies to lead an active life. Some of them went beyond their boudoir and started to appear on the stock exchanges, others took a great interest in sports.
