Busan Museum


One of the largest historical museums in South Korea is Busan Museum (Busan Museum). It is located in the city of the same name, in Namgu district. Here you can see ancient relics, telling about local life, culture and traditions .

general information

The institution was opened in 1978, and the first director was a well-known in the country scholar-researcher named Jan Meng June. Its main goal was to preserve the history and traditions of the city. Busan Museum is a 3-storey building. The last reconstruction was carried out here in 2002. Then the 2nd permanent exhibition hall was opened. Today there are already 7 such premises in the institution.

Museum collection

There are about 25 thousand exhibits in the institution. The most valuable of them belong to the prehistoric period (the Paleolithic era). In the Busan Museum you can see objects dedicated to:

All the inscriptions on the expositions are signed in Korean and English. In the Busan Museum there are rare items that are listed in the national historical heritage of the country. These include:

  1. Bodhisattva - this Buddhist sculpture, cast from bronze, reaches 0.5 m in height. The statue is included in the list under №200.
  2. Collection of works of Ryu - a work was written by Ryung in 1663. It describes the Japanese invasion of Korea, which occurred in 1592. This intangible cultural heritage is №111.
  3. The world map (Kunyu Quantu) - it was created in the Joseon era and is based on the Verbista project. It depicts the two hemispheres and some areas of land transferred from the famous block book (published in 1674). The object is included in the list under number 114.
  4. The painting "Antonyms" was written in 1696 and reflects the national portrait of that time. The work has No. 1501.

What else is in the institution?

In the inner courtyard of the Busan Museum there is also an exposition where you can see Buddhist artifacts, pagodas, monuments and statues. There are about 400 sculptures here. The most famous monuments are:

On the territory of the museum there is an educational department. Here, well-known historians of the country lecture and acquaint listeners with the peculiarities of local culture. Thematic workshops are held in a separate room.

In the courtyard of the museum there is a gift shop, a cafe and a park, planted with fragrant flowers and exotic plants. Here you can hide from the summer heat or relax on the benches.

Features of visit

The Busan Museum runs from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 in the morning until 18:00 in the evening. Parking and entrance for tourists are free. However, for an audio guide or a tour guide services, you will still have to pay extra. At the ticket office, children's and wheelchairs are given out.

How to get there?

From the center of Busan , you can get here by car or metro 2-nd line. The station is called Daeyeon, exit # 3. Buses No. 302, 239, 139, 134, 93, 68, 51, 24 also go to the museum. From the stop, it will take 10 minutes to go to the memorial park of the World (UN).
