Hedon Engunga


Hedon Engunga is located on the coast of the northeastern part of Busan . This is a rare case when the temple is not built in the mountains , but on the shore. Хэдон Енгунса is a Buddhist temple, built in 1376 year. Initially it was called Bomun. During its long history, the construction was destroyed, rebuilt and renamed. The motto of the temple is: "At least one of your desires will be fulfilled here thanks to your sincere prayers."

The Legend of the Creation of the Temple

The shrine was founded by the monk Naong. In the country there was a drought and a crop failure, people suffered from hunger and blamed God for this. Once a sea god appeared in Naongu and said that if people build a temple on the edge of Bongrae Mountain and pray there, all the difficulties will go away and they will be happy. The monk built a temple and called it Bomun. This word means the absolute and unlimited power of the Goddess of Mercy.

Since then, various monks have stood at the helm of Hedon Yengunsa. Once in the 80s of the last century, the monk Jungam prayed for the restoration of the seminary. His prayer lasted 100 days, and the Goddess of Mercy appeared to him in white clothes, she sat on the dragon's back. After this incident, the temple was renamed Hedon Yengunsa, which in translation means "temple of the palace of the sea Buddha".

People have noticed that their wishes are really fulfilled after visiting the temple, and because of this belief, many come here.

Description of the temple

Hedon Yengunsa - one of the leaders among the sights of Busan. It is not very big, but there are a lot of interesting things. Before the entrance visitors are met with statues depicting the signs of the Zodiac. Next you can see the pagoda, which brings good luck on the roads.

Then the stairs lead. It consists of 108 steps - they represent human desires, which you need to forget about when you visit the temple. Along the path are the altar and the figure of the golden Buddha on the ledge of the rock.

If you go the other way, then through the bridge you can go to the temple. The bridge itself means a transition from ordinary life to the realm of the Buddha.

There are many statuettes of monks on the territory of the temple of Hedon Yenguns. They are brought here by people whose desires are fulfilled. A large influx of visitors here on New Year's Eve. They hurry to turn to the Goddess of Mercy with their requests. On New Year's Eve it is customary here at dawn to write down your wishes on bronze plaques.

How to get there?

You need to get to the nearest Haeundae metro station on line No. 2 (exit number 7), then take bus number 181 and drive to Yonggungsa. From the underground to the temple can be reached on foot or by taxi.
