International Manga Museum

What associations do most people have when they mention Japan ? Kimono (national clothes), sushi ( national food ) and manga are colored comics, which are loved not only by the native inhabitants of the country, but also by many foreigners. In Japan, even there is a special museum , entirely dedicated to the bright pages and heroes of comics-manga.

What is interesting about the museum?

The Kyoto International Manga Museum is located in the city of Kyoto in the homonymous prefecture. Its opening took place in November 2006. The manga museum is a joint project of the city authorities of Kyoto and Seika University. It is located in a three-story building, where formerly housed an elementary school. Currently, the entire collection, which includes more than 300 thousand copies, is divided into several sectors:

Every day a special presentation takes place in the manga museum - kamisibai. This story with the help of pictures was coined in the XII century in Buddhist temples. It is believed that it is the kamisibai - the ancestor of modern manga and anime stories.

The manga wall is a 200-meter stand, where about 50,000 copies of books published between 1970 and 2005 are freely available for visitors. If you know the Japanese language, then you can easily take your favorite copy and enjoy reading in the adjacent park or in the museum cafe - here it is not forbidden. Now a small part of the collection is translated into English. The other part of the collection is available for study only to historians or researchers.
