Monte Titano

San Marino is the historic center of the state of the same name and, together with the Monte Titano mountain, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. The history of San Marino says that the state was founded in 301, and its founder was the stonecutter Marino, who settled here. He was a hired mason and arrived in Rome, hiding from persecution for his Christian beliefs. The Bishop of Riminsky, Saint Gaudentius, dedicated Mariano to the priesthood and he became deacon. And then fate led him to Monte Titano, where he settled. Now the date of September 3 is considered the day of the foundation of San Marino and Memorial Day.

The birth of an independent republic

As a gift to the townspeople, a covenant was left, which Marino gave to his community. Literally it sounds like: "I leave you free from other people". Marino after his death was canonized, and his community really became an independent state. Located on Mount Monte Titano, San Marino has firmly established its position and is now the center of tourism. Already for centuries this small state remains an independent republic.

Mount Monte Titano is not very high, it is absolutely not titanic. Its height does not exceed 740-750 meters, but its territory allowed to settle there the community, and then the state, following the behest of its founder. Now San-Marino has about 32 thousand people, and the state itself is divided into 9 districts, among which the most popular among tourists are Akkuaviva , Domagnano , Chiesanuova and Faetano . Areas called kastelli are the territories of cities with adjoining lands. And San Marino is one of them.

If you look at the mountain from the side, it is a limestone mountain, which time is gradually changing. Having climbed on its top, you can see the entire state as a whole. And you will have a view of the neighboring countries, since, having settled on Monte Titano, San Marino was in the center of Italy and surrounded by its territory from all sides.

Picturesque nature

On the mountain there are the sources of several rivers that descend down the slopes. In addition, it sometimes finds fossil parts of various fish, because during the Tertiary period, this area was the sea. In confirmation of this you can see the most valuable find, located in the Archaeological Museum of Bologna, it is the remains of a whale.

The slopes of Monte Titano are covered with excellent fertile soil, so there is beautiful vegetation around it, represented by oaks, cypresses, chestnuts and other trees. Thanks to vegetation, many animals settled on the slopes, even boars and deer are found here. And in the woods and groves you can hear the singing of many birds.

Watchtowers

Mount Monte Mitano has three peaks, each with a tower. These three towers are depicted on the coat of arms of San Marino and they crown the head of the Statue of Liberty. You will definitely see them if you decide to see San Marino completely. After all, the old city is just on the mountain. Despite the steep climbs, most tourists cross this path to see the incredible views that open from there. Do this and you will not regret it.

The towers have their names. This is Montale , Chest and Guaita . They are built on tops and very picturesque. In two towers, Chesta and Guaita, the entrance is open and can be inspected, but there is nothing remarkable inside. What can be seen from there is the mountain and the neighboring towers.

Montale is the smallest and the farthest of the three towers. The entrance to it can be closed, although it would be good to see the other two towers, and you could shoot a magnificent panorama. But there are not many tourists near this tower. Therefore, you can sit down and enjoy the views of nature and silence, which rarely happens in the modern world. Panoramas of the valley, which from here open, are also very beautiful. You can go down down the same path you came by, or find a wide path that leads to the parking lot.
