The State Museum


Having decided once to visit Italy, it is impossible not to visit the tiny republic of San Marino , located in its central part. The history of San Marino goes back to the past. Walking the streets of the medieval city will forever remain in the heart of the traveler. The first thing you'll notice when driving up to San Marino is its most important tourist attraction, its symbol is the three towers , connected together by fortress walls. Each tower has its name - Guaita , Chesta and Montale . The main museums are located exactly within the walls of these towers.

The centuries-old legacy has been collected in bitterness throughout the whole existence of the republic and it was collected under the roofs of numerous museums of the republic. One of the most significant is the State Museum.

A bit of history

It was originally opened in the Government residence of the Palazzo Valloni in 1866. Its founder is Count Luigi Cibralio and supporters of the republic.

Despite the age of the museum, whose history begins in the 17th century, San Marino constantly digs and searches for ancient values ​​that reveal all the details of the culture and way of life of the ancestors on the lands of the location of the modern republic.

Excavations are conducted relatively recently and there are already many interesting finds. Under the arches of the museum are collected the most diverse archaeological and historical finds, collections of paintings, sculptures and ceramics. All expositions of the museum are located on 4 floors with many halls, in which the exhibits are thematically grouped.

The first level of the museum

Here are the archaeological finds, from the Stone Age to today, found on the territory of the Republic of San Marino. Residents of the republic are in awe of their country, therefore they constantly work to establish a historical chain. It's so interesting, who inhabited this territory in ancient times, how the culture changed.

The most rich in the finds is the province of Domagnano, formerly inhabited by the Romans. More and more often the legend of the founder of San Marino is confirmed. On Mount Titano, in the Tanaccia area, elements of the hut dating back to the 5th century AD were found and presented in the museum. One of the unexpected finds are jewelry, discovered in the late 19 th century, dated 5-6 century AD.

The Middle Ages left in San Marino a lot of reminders of itself: walls, towers and architecture.

The second level of the museum

On the second level there are collections of works of art, thematically wrapped in the myth of the republic and in every way connected with history. The exhibition begins with paintings and objects found and adorned the monastery of St. Claire.

The main hall of the second level is dedicated to masterpieces of painting and art, examples of which are the works of Guercino, Cesare, Benedetto Gennari, Matteo Loves, Elisabetta Sirani. In the halls of this level you can get acquainted with ceramics, musical instruments, insignia of the main orders of the Republic of San Marino. And a separate room is reserved for gifts to the State Museum at different times. There are precious tables dating from the beginning of the nineteenth century, sculptures of the 15th-16th centuries.

The third level of the museum

Here are exhibits representing the art of various corners of Europe, the collection of Byzantine icons is a valuable relic, kept by the museum. Also at this level are interesting clay items of famous Italian, French and Dutch factories.

The fourth level of the museum

Its place is occupied by a majestic collection of Egyptian artifacts, various funeral figurines made of bronze, deities, amulets. Greek vases supplemented with basic elements of Cypriot, Roman ceramics. Amphorae, glassware, a wide range of necklaces, brooches and various ornaments are widely represented. You can see the collection of coins, coins and medals of San Marino.

How to get to the State Museum in San Marino?

San Marino does not have its own airport. Therefore, the most convenient destination is the neighboring city of Rimini, which is located just a dozen kilometers from the republic. And then you can take the bus number 72 and within an hour get to the heart of San Marino. The bus fare is about 9 euros. You do not have to take a ticket at the ticket office, you can buy it right on the bus.
