Gallery of tapestries

The famous gallery of tapestries (the Arazzi Gallery) is one of the three galleries of the papal ( Apostolic ) palace in the Vatican . Here are tapestries of biblical themes, depicting scenes from the New and Old Testaments.

general information

At 100 meters of the gallery are currently represented 10 tapestries. The plot was based on the drawings of the students of the brilliant Santi Raphael. The master painfully perceived the comparisons of his work and the works of Michelangelo, so the drawings were created in the characteristic for Raphael style: with deliberate exaggeration of figures over the landscape, deliberate allocation of gestures and other details. The tapestries were woven at the famous manufactory of Peter van Elst by Flemish masters. Originally (1531) tapestries were presented in the Sistine Chapel next to the frescoes of Raphael, but in 1838 were transferred to the gallery of Arazzi, where they became available for viewing to the general public.

All tapestries are handmade by masters, the finest silk and wool are used. Tapestries are woven with light tones on one side and dark on the other, the figures are strictly centered, so the illusion is created that the figures turn after the visitor. The most famous tapestries of the gallery are: "Wonderful fishing", "St. Paul preaches in Athens", "Pasi my sheep", "Death of Ananias". The gallery is always light twilight, curtains are drawn, it is prohibited to shoot masterpieces with flash and this is not the whim of the caretakers: they are trying to preserve masterpieces, because the old tapestries fade from sunlight and bright flashes.
