Cape Ganteum Nature Reserve

In Australia, on the amazing island of Kangaroo, there is a nature conservation zone, striking with its magnificent views, called the Cape Gantheaume Conservation park.

general information

The park occupies a rather large area, which is equal to 24 thousand hectares, and consists of 2 separate parts:

In 1971, this territory was first considered a reserve, but only on October 15 in 1993 the boundaries of wildlife were officially defined, which officially named the reserve "Cape Ganteum".

The territory of Cape Gantheaume Conservation park is mostly flat, it is covered with sand dunes with a variety of coastal vegetation (for example, shrub eucalyptus). Rocky cliffs here alternate with stretches, which smoothly descend to the sea, and thus form a unique landscape of "Cape Gantemuma." In the protected bays hidden cozy beaches.

Inhabitants of the reserve

In the reserve "Cape Ganteum" you can meet a wide variety of birds: Korolkov, herons, swans, terns, gulls and rainbow birds, as well as various parrots. If you want to see a large number of birds, then go to the lagoon of Murray. In the central part of the nature protection zone, such species of mammals as Tammar Wallabies and brush-tailed opossums inhabit, and on the Cape Linois there is a huge number of kangaroos.

There are not many reptiles in the Cape Gantheaume Conservation park, but there are several species of poisonous snakes on the island of Kangaroo that are worth remembering. For example, in the swampy terrain, there is a tiger snake, usually slipping when people approach, if it is not in danger.

A small part of the territory of the "Cape Ganteum" reserve is occupied by the eastern edge of the famous bay of D'Estrées Bay (D'Estre). At this place once the aborigines were engaged in whaling, today it is a deserted place on the beach. Here is the beginning of the hiking trail leading to the cape of Gantoumu, which is 20 kilometers long.

For visitors, 4 specialized trails have been developed, they are considered light and suitable for small children and the elderly.

How to get there?

Seagull ferries travel to Kangaroo Island, they are, by the way, car-passenger, so you can go right here with the car. Also here fly airplanes from Adelaide . Arriving on the island, the reserve is best to go with an organized tour. If you want to get by yourself on the car, then from Kingscote along the main highway follow the signs.
