Ben Lomond National Park


Tasmania is an island and the eponymous state of Australia , in which the mountainous terrain predominates. On its entire territory a large number of steep slope plateaus and mountains are scattered, the height of which varies between 600-1500 meters. Here are two high mountains - Ossa and Legs-Tor. The territory of 16.5 thousand hectares around Mount Legs-Tor was united in the national park "Ben Lomond".

General information

Ben Lomond National Park is located on the top of steep cliffs, proudly towering above the desert terrain of the north-eastern part of the island of Tasmania. The park itself is an alpine plateau on which desert landscapes predominate. Its name is the national park "Ben Lomond" in honor of the eponymous mountain in Scotland. In previous years, at the foot of the park, mining operations were conducted, which led to the devastation of the terrain. After the completion of the mining work, some of the nearby cities (Avoca, Rossarden) fell into disrepair. Now the main city of the valley is Fingal, located along the river Esk. The road to South Esque leads to it.

One of the main attractions of the park is mountain serpentine, which is also called "Jacob's Ladder" or "road to heaven." To get on its top, it is necessary to overcome many sharp turns. Therefore, in itself, lifting can be safely called an interesting adventure. The road leads to the highest point of the park - Mount Legs-Tor, whose height reaches 1,572 meters above sea level.

On the territory of the National Park "Ben Lomond" inhabits most of the endemic species of feathered Tasmania, including insectivorous daisies and sundew. Of the animals, kangaroo wallabies, opossums and wombats are most common here. On the coast of the Upper Ford River you can find echidna and platypus.

How to get there?

Ben Lomond National Park is located in the north-eastern part of Tasmania. From the mainland of Australia, you can get here by plane. The airport is in the nearby town of Launceston. The flight from Canberra takes about 3 hours.

The park can also be reached by car, but note that the route provides a ferry service. In this case it is better to start the road in Melbourne. It is here that the Melbourne - Devonport ferry is formed. In Devonport, you can change to a car and follow the National Highway route. After about 2 hours you will be in Ben Lomond National Park.
