Lake Burley-Griffin

Australia - a country in which it is impossible not to fall in love, and its capital, Canberra - a city that surprises and delights every tourist who came here. One of the bright attractions of this place is the Berly-Griffin lake, which strikes not only with its beauty, but also mainly with the fact that it was created not by natural, but by artificial means.

History of the Lake Burley-Griffin

It is customary to keep a record of the history of the existence of Lake Burley-Griffin since 1908, when it was decided to award the city of Canberra with the status of the capital. Many places had to be changed, thus transforming the general appearance of the country. The authorities announced a contest, which was won by Walter Berley Griffin. It was this man who began to transform the capital. In the project of the architect it was planned to create in the very center of the city a huge reservoir, which includes several pools. Despite the fact that the authorities did not immediately approve Griffin's project and planned work was carried out for several years, the lake Berlie-Griffin was finally finalized in 1960.

Huge work had to be done by specialists in order to carry out soil conservation, set up special data for traps and drainage devices. Later in the very center of Lake Burley-Griffin appeared a monument to James Cook, in the form of a fountain with a globe, on which was marked the route of this famous traveler.

October 17, 1964, half a century later, the lake was officially opened to visitors and received the name of its architect, who planned this Australian outlandish to the smallest detail. Years later, the King's Avenue Bridge and Commonwealth Avenue Bridge appeared over the lake, and a road leading to the Scrivener Dam was built.

Currently, the lake Berly-Griffin can be safely considered the center of the city. Along the perimeter of this place was erected a huge number of beautiful buildings with a great national value, including:

In addition, the territory of the lake has become a place for a large number of entertainment for every taste. Boating is organized here, fishing and sailing tournaments are held.
