Glycerin candles for newborns

Often young mothers face such a problem as constipation in newborns and infants. Especially often children with constipation, who are on artificial feeding, suffer from constipation. But such problems also occur in children who are breastfeeding because of changes in the diet of the mother.

A very popular means for controlling constipation in infants and newborns is suppositories with glycerin. In case of constipation, the mother will be advised by your mother with experience, and many pediatricians. But, when you are going to use glycerine suppositories to eliminate stool problems in your newborn baby, you must first learn everything about this remedy.

Can glycerin candles be given to newborn children?

There are no special glycerin suppositories for newborns. Most likely, you will buy in the pharmacy usual candles with glycerin or candles for children (for example, glycelax). In the annotation to both, you can read that they are used in children, starting at 3 months of age (and a child who is less than 1 month old is considered a newborn).

But in some cases, if it is really necessary, pediatricians still prescribe glycerin suppositories not only for infants, but also for newborns. It is believed that this is not dangerous, since the active substance contained in them - glycerol - is not absorbed by the intestine, but only irritates the rectum. Consequently, glycerin suppositories are not addictive and do not have any negative impact on the children's organism as a whole.

However, glycerin suppositories can still harm the growing body: if the glycerine candles are placed unregistered and unlimitedly in the child, a natural peristalsis and defecation can be disrupted for a long time. In extreme cases, much more serious problems are possible, such as enterocolitis, drug diarrhea, intestinal obstruction.

Glycerin suppositories for newborns - dosage

Children's glycerin suppositories are released in a dosage of 0.75 g, adults - in a dosage of 1.5 g. For children starting from 3 months, it is allowed to administer 0.75 g (i.e., one baby candle or half an adult) in day not more than 7 days. In newborns, this dose should be stretched for at least 3 days. It is not recommended to put glycerin candles more often than once a day.

How to put glycerin candles to newborns?

First of all, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. With a clean sharp knife, cut the suppository (candle) along into 2-4 parts. Lubricate the baby's ass with baby cream or butter. Put the baby on the back, with one hand lift his legs, bend and press them to the tummy. Introduce the cut piece of candle into the child's anus slowly and carefully. Then hold the palm of the child's buttocks closed for 2-3 minutes (you can take the baby in your arms - and you will be more comfortable, and it's calmer). At the end of this time or a little later, the crumb will be able to "do his own thing." As a rule, one should wait for no more than half an hour. Some babies manage to do this in the first few seconds after the candle is introduced.

The main thing to remember is using glycerin suppositories to combat constipation in newborns

Glycerin suppositories are not a remedy for the treatment of constipation, but only for the elimination of its symptoms. To use them it is necessary only until the main cause of problems with the child's chair is clarified and eliminated. This is the first thing the pediatrician should help parents. Often, to normalize the digestion and stool of the baby it is enough just to adjust the nutrition of the nursing mother or to change the milk formula. The cause of constipation may be dysbiosis - then a thorough examination and treatment is necessary. So, parents, be extremely attentive to the health of your baby and do not get carried away with symptomatic treatment.
