Compress on the throat

Pain sensations and perspiration in the throat, hoarseness and reddening of the mucous oropharyngeal mucosa are most often caused by a viral or bacterial infection and are common symptoms of catarrhal diseases. One of the simple and effective methods of treatment in these cases is a moist warming compress on the throat.

The effect of this procedure is associated with local and reflex action of heat, resulting in a rush of blood and a decrease in pain sensitivity. Also, warming compresses have a distracting and absorbing effect.

How to make a compress on the throat?

Doing a compress on the throat with pharyngitis , laryngitis and other inflammatory diseases of the throat should follow several recommendations:

  1. For warming compresses, use cotton cloth folded several times (4 - 6 layers), moistened in a liquid (alcohol solution or other) at room temperature. The tissue should be squeezed and put on the throat area, and on top put compress paper or polyethylene. It should be ensured that this layer is wider than the previous one, otherwise the liquid will evaporate and the effect of the compress will be minimal. The third layer should be a warming, for which the cotton wool (fixed from above by a bandage) or a warm scarf is used.
  2. Strengthen the compress should not be too tight, so as not to squeeze the blood and lymph vessels. With laryngitis and pharyngitis, moistened tissue is recommended to be placed above the submandibular lymph nodes and the place of palatine tonsils. In angina compress is superimposed on the posterior part and lateral surfaces of the neck, while the thyroid area remains open.
  3. The duration of applying a warming wet compress is six to eight hours. It is best to do such a procedure at night or just lying in bed.
  4. During the day, the procedure can be repeated, but do not use the same tissue again, because it accumulates toxins, secreted by the skin.
  5. After removing the compress, the skin should be wiped dry and warm the throat for a while with a thin bandage. You can not go out immediately after the procedure.
  6. If after the procedure you notice the appearance of rash or other allergic reactions, then the compress with the use of these medical components should be discarded.

Alcohol (vodka) compress on the throat

The simplest and most common variant of a warming compress with sore throat is alcohol or vodka. For its preparation, the cloth should be wetted in alcohol (96%), diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 3 or in vodka diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 1.

In most cases, such a compress is recommended to be done overnight for 5 to 7 days. You can also hold the compress for two or three hours, repeating the procedure 3 - 4 times a day.

Mustard compress on the throat

Another kind of warming compress is the mustard compress. It is prepared differently: mix the dough from mustard powder and wheat flour, taken evenly, using hot water (40-50 ° C). The resulting mass to spread on a thick fabric with a layer about one centimeter thick and attach to the affected area. On top, cover with compress paper and secure with a bandage or scarf.
