Today, people who have chosen the profession of a lawyer are very much in demand. But the professional day of the lawyer appeared in Russia not so long ago - in 2008. It was introduced by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation. Today, the Day of the lawyer in Russia is celebrated every year on December 3.
History
Until 2008, there was no single common holiday for those who stand guard over the interests of citizens and the state.
Only holidays were celebrated for certain narrow categories of representatives of this profession. There is a version that the modern date of the Day of the lawyer is chosen because in 1864 the Russian Empire began a large-scale judicial reform connected with the adoption of a series of charters and other acts. Since 2009, the main state gift for the Day of Lawyer is the award of the "Lawyer of the Year" prize. It is considered the highest legal award in the Russian Federation. By the way, the Day of the lawyer of 2013 will also do without determining the best representative of this profession.
The history of the Day of the lawyer is intertwined with such holidays as the Day of the Prosecutor's Office worker, the Day of the Worker of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Notaries, lawyers, employees of investigative bodies celebrate their holidays.
Day of the lawyer in the CIS countries
The day of a lawyer in Russia sometimes coincides with a similar holiday in Belarus. By the decree of the resident, the Day of the lawyer in Belarus is celebrated on the first December Sunday. Honor their law enforcement in other countries. Thus, the Day of the lawyer in Ukraine is celebrated annually on October 8 according to the President's Decree. There are also professional holidays for notaries and lawyers. In Moldova lawyers are congratulated on October 19. And the Day of the lawyer in Kazakhstan has not yet been formally established. However, such an initiative was announced in May 2012 by Maksut Narikbaev, head of the Kazakh Humanitarian Law University. In his opinion, the celebration of the Day of the lawyer at the national level will emphasize the importance of this profession in modern Kazakhstan.
International practice
Every year on July 17, human rights defenders living around the world celebrate International Justice Day - a kind of international day of the lawyer and the legal system as a whole. This date was chosen because in 1998 the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court was adopted. On this day, events are held, which are united by one thing - they are all aimed at strengthening and maintaining international justice in the world.
In the US, who consider themselves to be models of law and democracy, there is no such holiday. However, it is replaced in some way by the Day of Law, which was established in 1958 by Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States. It is celebrated every year on the first of May. In the former union republics, this day is a day of work, therefore the American government, in order to retire from the remnants of the communist regime, will celebrate May Day of Loyalty and Law. But the essence of the holiday from this in general does not change.
Military lawyers
Military lawyers are a separate category of lawyers who deal with the application of legal norms to legal relations in the armed forces. Since 2006, Russia introduced the Day of the military lawyer, celebrated on March 29. The Russian military prosecutor's office is supported by lawyers, whose competence includes such tasks as investigation of criminal cases, supervision of border troops, FSB agencies, compliance with the law in organizations where there are various military formations.
But since there are other executive bodies in the country where military service is provided, March 29 is not a holiday for all military lawyers.
