Kalmar Castle


In the Swedish town of Kalmar is one of the most famous in the country ancient castles - Kalmar. Appearing in the Renaissance, this grandiose structure became a specimen of the Northern European fortification art.

History of the Kalmar Castle

Kalmar Castle in Sweden was laid in place of the old watchtower. It consisted of asymmetrical walls, at the corners were installed round French towers, and above the gate - for two gate rooms. In those days, Kalmar Castle was used to protect urban residents from pirates. Later, King Magnus ordered the erection of an outpost on the border of Sweden and Denmark , and a century later, Queen Margarete concluded here the Kalmar Union - an alliance between Sweden, Norway and Denmark. This significant event occurred in 1397.

In the 16th century, in accordance with the requirements of the fortification, the castle was thoroughly rebuilt. Subsequently, the construction was used for different purposes, and only in the XIX century it was restored and turned into a castle-museum.

In summer the castle is open for visits every day from 10:00 to 16:00. The rest of the time you can get here at 10:00 to 16:00, but only on Saturdays and Sundays.
