Stromovka Park

Stromovka Park is a large landscape park in the Bubeneč district of Prague, a monument of culture and nature . It is considered the most beautiful of all the parks of the Czech capital. Since the XIX century has become a favorite holiday destination of Prague and a popular tourist attraction .

A bit of history

Stromovka Park in Prague was founded in the 13th century - presumably by King Przemysl Otakar II. The name itself comes from the word tree (in Czech - strom), but it also has a different name - Královská obora, which translates as "Royal Park", since it was originally a royal park for game hunting for deer.

Since 1319, the territory was used for conducting knight tournaments, and under King Wladyslaw II Jagiellon, at the end of the XV century, the park again became hunting grounds; here even a hunting lodge was erected.

In 1548 the park was expanded, but soon ceased to be used for its intended purpose and came to desolation, even the peasants of the suburbs and surrounding villages grazed their cattle here. At Rudolph II he was again restored and expanded.

In 1804 the park was open to the public. In 2002 Stromovka was badly affected by the flood; The restoration of the park began only in 2003, after the residential areas of the city were restored. Not only were the damaged trees removed, but even the top layer of the soil was replaced. All bushes and perennial flowers were re-planted.

What is Stromovka in the park?

The landscape park occupies 95 hectares of land. There are many interesting things for tourists:

  2. Sculpture of the girl-bather , located near one of the reservoirs, is a real decoration of the park. Its length reaches 15 m. The sculpture was not damaged during the flood. There are other statues in the park.
  3. The Summer Palace is a neo-gothic building that was the residence of the Governor of Bohemia, from the moment the Habsburgs came to power and until the end of the monarchy in the Czech Republic . The palace was erected (or rather rebuilt from a hunting lodge) in 1805 according to the project of architect Palliardi, under whose leadership the Stromovka park itself was altered in Prague, before becoming public property.

The vegetation of the park is very rich: there are many coniferous trees, among which are blue fir trees, deciduous trees, including fruit trees and shrubs. Weeping willows grow over the ponds, and water lilies bloom in the lakes themselves. On a large lake you can make a boat trip on a boat.
