The Museum of Toilets


The capital of the Czech Republic has always been famous for its numerous museums , including very unordinary. One of these is the toilet bowl museum in Prague . Its exposition consists of objects that were intended for the administration of the natural needs of man.

History of the Museum of Toilets

In 2001, the family of Jan Sedlachekova acquired an ancient fortress, which was located in a small town of Třebotov near Prague. When carrying out repairs, an interesting object was discovered: a castle medieval toilet. The find was so unusual that Ian had the idea of ​​creating a museum of toilets and night vases. Restoration of the building was completed in 2003, and its doors opened to visitors. For 10 years, the museum was replenished with new exhibits that were in antique shops, on sales and even in second-hand. In 2014, the exposition was moved to another building in the city center.

What can you see in the museum of toilets in Prague?

Visitors to the museum of toilets will see what our ancestors used before the invention of a modern toilet with a water seal. Here you can find more than 2000 copies of the most diverse forms, varieties, sizes and colors. They are made of faience and porcelain, aluminum and copper, silver and gold. Today the museum's collection is the largest in the world.

Among the numerous exhibits you can see unique items that have their own history:

  1. Female road urinal "burdalu". This device was used in the Middle Ages by wealthy women during long journeys or many hours of preaching priests. Outwardly, this vessel, made of porcelain and decorated with paintings, is similar to a dining saucer. But in order to distinguish these two objects, miniature figures were installed on the bottom of the urinal or an eye with an inscription stating that everything here would be kept a secret was drawn.
  2. Cups, vases, vessels called kuttrolf with a narrow neck were used by the male part of the population in those situations when it was impossible to enter the toilet.
  3. Napoleon Bonaparte's night pot with the image of a laurel wreath.
  4. Abraham Lincoln 's night vase from his private bedroom in the White House.
  5. Toilet of the Chinese Emperor Qianlong .
  6. Toilet from the Titanic cabin .
  7. Road toilets with various drawers, playing music, etc.
  8. A homemade pot , converted from a helmet, which was used by German soldiers who took part in World War II.
  9. Collection of flushing devices and toilet paper .
  10. Various themed decorations , for example, the smallest in the museum night pot with a diameter of only 1 mm - this is an elegant silver pendant.

For the toilet museum in Prague, a special day is November 19, when World Toilet Day is celebrated. At this time, special exhibitions are organized here, as well as the final competition for the best thematic photography or history.

To visit this unusual institution, you can take tram routes №№ 3, 7, 17, 52. You have to leave at the stop Výtoň. The museum runs daily from 10:00 to 18:00. A ticket for an adult costs 150 CZK, which is about $ 7, children under 6 years are admitted for free.
