History of the theater

In translation from Latin, the name "Hibernia" means "Ireland". Once expelled from Ireland, the monks arrived in Prague, where they obtained a place and permission to build a monastery and a library. Where there used to be the altar part of the monastery building, now there is a stage of the theater "Gibernia".

The building "The Giberns", in which the theater is located, has a very rich history. During the Thirty Years War, Ferdinand II allowed to open a theological seminary here. In the middle of the 17th century a baroque church was built on this place, which later was heavily damaged and then reorganized. Since the end of the XVIII century, the house "U Gibernov" was used for secular purposes by the Czech Theater Society. In the beginning of the XIX century, under the leadership of the Austrian architect L. Montoy and Professor J. Fisher, the building was reconstructed, after which it hosted exhibitions, and then it was transferred to the theater "Hibernia". Instead of the chapel, there is an auditorium with 1000 seats and a stage, as well as 2 restaurants, 4 bars and a summer terrace, located on the roof with a stunning view of Prague.

The opening of the theater took place on November 23, 2006.

The repertoire of the theater "Hibernia"

The first season of the theater was marked by the release of the musical "Golem", dedicated to the legend from the Jewish quarter of the Czech capital . The production tells about Rabbi Levi and Goleme - an animated doll made of clay. The debut of the musical "Golem" was so successful that the theater management decided to continue the production of musicals, as well as to include comedies, classical works and children's plays in the repertoire.

Since 2007, in "Hibernia" you can visit various cultural events, exhibitions, presentations, conferences and congresses.
