Museum of Orthodox Icon Painting


Andorra can be called an ancient country, since scientists mentioned it in the Latin letters of the second century BC. At the moment, there is no abundance of historical monuments in the country, although here you can see a large number of ruins of Arab fortresses, Roman bridges and temples of the Middle Ages.

History of the museum

It seems absolutely incredible that the Museum of Orthodox iconography located in Andorra , because the country is originally Catholic. The museum is named after St. George. In Western Europe there are only three such museums. It is well known that this museum appeared in the colorful Andorran city of Ordino thanks to Anton Zorzano, who lived in Andorra and was the honorary consul of Ukraine in this country. Ordino is one of the seven communities of the Principality and is located in the northern part of the country.

Anton Zorzano was a great admirer and connoisseur of art relating to Orthodoxy, and the collection was originally in his private possession. But over time, it was still put up so that as many people could admire these treasures.

Exposition of the museum

The exhibition displays Orthodox icons not only from Ukraine. There are works of Russian and Bulgarian masters, you can also see canvases from Poland and Greece. In total there are about seventy works in the exposition and the oldest ones are dated to the 15th century. The rest belong to the period from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

The museum presents many images of the Savior, and a huge section is dedicated to the Theotokos. Separately, there are icons on which various saints are depicted. And the honorable place among them is occupied by the faces of St. George the Victorious.

In addition to the icons of Orthodoxy, here are exhibited the ancient crucifixes, which were created in Spain in the period from the 11th to the 19th century. In total, the collection has more than three hundred exhibits.

And for those who want to study this topic more deeply, the Andorran Museum of Orthodox Iconography has a collection of works on the topic, which are written in different languages. Such works in the museum collected more than three hundred.

How to get there?

From the capital of the country the shuttle bus SnoBus is moving, it stops in Ordino, the fare - from € 1.00 to € 2.50. By car to Ordino you can take the route CG3, it is north of La Massana . The village is located 3 kilometers from the road and 9 kilometers north of Andorra la Vella .
