Larnac Castle

Larnaka Castle is located in the town of Larnaca on the Finikoudes waterfront. The fort was built by the Turks in 1625 to protect the harbor. The basis for the castle was a medieval Ottoman fortress, so the architectural style is defined as Ottoman and Romanesque. To date, the fort serves as a premise for the museum, which was opened in 1969. Then it consisted of only two rooms, but in twenty years the collection of the museum has increased significantly and it became necessary to open two more halls.

What to see?

The museum of the castle of Larnaka presents valuable finds found on the territory of Cyprus , as well as what has to do with the history of the island. But the building itself is part of the past, so there are signs on the walls of the fort that tell about the historical events that took place in the castle. For example, to the right of the entrance, which today is an arched gallery, is a premise that served as a place for execution of estimated sentences during the British colonial period. Today there is a gallows here, which, without commentary of the guide, tells about the terrible events that took place here.

Next to this room is a metal staircase that leads to the second floor, where it is already not about the history of the castle, but about the Medieval age of the city of Larnaca . This gallery serves as a regional museum.

Having finished the tour inside the building, it is worth going down to the courtyard to see the German cannons of the early XX century. They are also valuable exhibits, as they are produced by Friedrich Krupp AG. But in the eastern side of the castle are guns, which belong to the medieval period. Such a variety of defensive weapons also gives an opportunity to imagine how military weapons developed over the centuries.

In order to see the whole fort, you need to climb the stairs located on the west side of the castle. And at the top of this wall the guards watched and watched, so that the enemy did not appear on the horizon. For tourists from this place a beautiful view of the castle and its surroundings opens.

How to get there?

The attraction is on the Finikoudes waterfront. Unfortunately, there are no stops nearby, so you can get to the fort by taxi or a sightseeing bus. The latter option will be most convenient, as next to the Larnac Castle there are no other attractions, only hotels and restaurants.
