Angeloktisti Church

Not far from Larnaka in the village of Kitty is one of the many attractions of Cyprus - the Church of Angeloktisti (Angeloktisti Church). This stone church was erected in honor of Panagia Angeloktisti, the Virgin Mary of the Angels. And, according to legend, the temple was built in one night by angels.

In fact, this building is unique from many points of view. Just imagine: some of the mosaics that have survived to this day belong to the VI-VII centuries. Around the same time, a cross-domed church appeared. But the Latin chapel was added to the building much later, in the XIII century.

Features of the building

The humid climate did not spare the painting of the temple. But some of the decor is still preserved. And this is one of the best examples of the Byzantine icon-painting school. The mosaic surviving in the vault of the altar apse even stands on par with the ancient mosaics of Rome, according to many experts. It is thin and simple. But it was simplicity that was lost in icon painting under the influence of European art. This mosaic depicts the Blessed Virgin with the baby. There are also images of the Great Martyrs Demetrius of Thessalonica and St. George the Victorious. They are written together in the guise of warriors.

Now in one part of the church there is a museum, where you will get acquainted with church utensils and Byzantine icons. Around the Church of Angeloktisti in Cyprus, grow a few huge and ancient trees. Among them there is even a tree, considered a monument of nature.
