Magnesia in pregnancy

Often, in the list of prescriptions during pregnancy, magnesium is found, which is correctly called magnesium sulfate. This drug, as a rule, is administered as a solution, intravenously. What is magnesia?

Magnesium sulfate is a white powder used to prepare a solution for intravenous or intramuscular administration. Can be applied orally, orally. Depending on the method of taking, the action that the preparation has on the body is distinguished:

• suspension - has a pronounced cholagogue, as well as a laxative effect. Often it can be used for the purpose of removing salts of heavy metals from the body when poisoning them.
• a dropper with magnesia, often prescribed for pregnant women, - helps lower blood pressure, has a mild sedative effect, reduces swelling, muscle tone, including uterus. However, do not use magnesium in the early stages of pregnancy, as well as before the very birth.

What is the purpose of magnesium during pregnancy?

As already mentioned above, when carrying a child this drug is administered intravenously, in the form of a dropper. Among the indications for such use of the drug during pregnancy, it is necessary to name:

1. Presence of risk of premature birth. Often, women who for one reason or another have an increase in the tone of uterine myometrium in the second half of pregnancy, prescribe this drug. It is almost always used in those women who have a so-called habitual miscarriage, i.e. when 2 or more gestations ended in miscarriages.
2. The presence of gestosis in pregnancy is also an indication for the purpose of the drug.
3. Pronounced swelling, noted in late pregnancy, requires the appointment of magnesia. By increasing the permeability of blood vessels, the drug contributes to an increase in daily diuresis, which increases the amount of fluid withdrawn from the body of the future mother.
4. Hypertensive disease, noted during gestation, is also on the list of diseases in which magnesium sulfate is used. As a rule, it is appointed in cases where there are periodic crises.
5. Attacks of epilepsy, eclampsia, convulsive syndromes, noted during pregnancy, can be quenched with magnesium.

What are the contraindications to the use of the medicine?

Virtually all medications have contraindications to use. Magnesium sulfate is no exception. It is not used when:

• individual intolerance;
• lowered arterial pressure;
• pronounced bradycardia, when the number of heartbeats decreases to 55 per minute;
• renal failure;
• immediately before the onset of delivery, for 2-3 hours;
• malignant formations of different localization;
• exacerbation of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

Also it is necessary to say that it is impossible to combine reception of a preparation and use of biological additives, multivitamin complexes in which structure there is a calcium.

During the use of magnesia during pregnancy, there may be side effects from its use. Among them are:

• sensation of heat;
• weakness;
• headache;
• nausea;
• vomiting;
• the appearance of dyspnea;
• increased sweating.

When these appear, it is necessary to inform the doctor who is monitoring the course of the pregnancy.
