Museum of Art - history of creation and description

The Art Museum was opened in 1932 in the house of the first mayor of Tel Aviv, Meir Dizengoff, who was on Rothschild Boulevard. The purpose of the foundation was to instill in the population a sense of aesthetics and harmony, which is characteristic of Tel Aviv - a city with a variety of beauties and achievements in various arts.

The museum became the cultural center of the young city. Gradually, the collections increased, and the founders came to the conclusion that it was necessary to expand the exhibition pavilions. At first, Elena Rubinstein's pavilion opened on Shderot Tarsat Street. Following the main building, which is located on the boulevard Shaul Ha-Melek, in 1971. The exposition occupied both buildings.

In 2002 a new wing was built, according to Preston Scott Cohen's project. Finance for construction was allocated not only by the city municipality, but also by sponsors. The annexe fit organically into the main building. The five-story wing is constructed of gray concrete, and the ceiling is made of glass. It is the only light source in the daytime, so it fills the pavilions with a bright white light.

Artificial light, which works on the same principle, only illuminates the building from the inside. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is famous not only for its architecture, but also for its exposition. Most of it was donated by Peggy Guggenheim. Among the exhibits there are works of Russian constructivists, as well as Italian neorealism and American expressionism.
