The structure is an exact copy of the wooden palace in which the sultan of Mansur Shah lived. He led in Malacca in the XV century. The original structure was burnt by a lightning strike a year after the ruler came to power.

To build the Palace of the Sultans of Malacca began in 1984 on October 27 in the center of the city, near the foot of St. Paul's Hill. The official opening of the site took place in 1986, on 17 July. The main purpose of the building was to preserve the history, so when planning and searching for information about the construction of such buildings, a special committee was established. It included:

  1. The Malacca branch, belonging to the Malaysian Historical Society (Persatuan Sejarah Malaysia);
  2. State Corporation for the Development of Malacca (Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Melaka);
  3. City Museum.

The model of the Sultan's Palace was executed by representatives of the Association of Artists (Persatuan Pelukis Melaka). For the construction of the building, the city administration allocated an area of ​​0.7 hectares and $ 324 million. When constructing the landmarks, the workers used traditional materials and construction methods used in the 15th century.

Description of the Palace of the Sultans of Malacca

The original construction is considered one of the most difficult on our planet, because it is built completely without nails and is supported by carved wooden pillars. When building a modern building for tiles, zinc and copper were not used, and the beams were not gilded. Also, the replica of the palace is smaller than the original. This is due to the limited area.

The modern Palace of Sultans of Malacca consists of 3 floors, has a total height of 18.5 m, a width of 12 m, and a length of 67.2 m. The facade of the building is decorated with carvings using traditional plant motifs. The roof of the structure is made in several tiers, and on their edges there is an ornament in the style of Minangkabau.

Inside the building you can see the reconstruction of the scenes of palace life from the reign of the Malacca Sultanate and historical events that play an important role for the life of the city. Today the institution is used as a cultural museum telling the history of the settlement. Here are stored more than 1300 exhibits, which are presented:

Features of visit

The Palace of Sultans of Malacca works daily, except Tuesday, from 09:00 am and until 17:30 pm. The cost of admission is about $ 2.

From the center of Malacca to the sights can be reached on foot or by car along the streets of Jalan Chan Koon Cheng and Jalan Panglima Awang. The distance is about 2 km.
