Dakshinkali

Nepalese are a very religious nation. Any encyclopedia will tell you that the main religion in Nepal is Hinduism. But in fact, everything is somewhat different. The religion of Nepalese is a mixture of Hinduism, Buddhist beliefs and Tantrism. However, the essence remains the same: in order to protect oneself from evil spirits, they should be properly appeased. So the people flock to the temples to please this or that deity. And if you are obsessed with the idea of conquering the East, then by all means visit Dakshinkali, one of the most eerie temples of Nepal.

Honoring the bloodthirsty deity

Dakshinkali, a temple of the goddess Kali, is located in the southern part of the Kathmandu valley . Those who are at least remotely familiar with the pantheon of gods in Hinduism will understand why Europeans and Russians give this place an atmosphere of horror and rejection. All because blood sacrifices are brought here to Kali if not helped, at least not to openly interfere in this or that endeavor. Representatives of rich castes give the deity a black kid. If the family is poor, they carry chickens. There are also those who do not accept bloody patronage - such bear Cali fruit and flowers. The altar in the temple is poured with the blood of the victim, and after that the deity is considered well-groomed.

The temple of the goddess Kali for tourists

The temple of the goddess Kali in Kathmandu is one of the most impressive religious places in Nepal. The floor here in the literal sense of blood, while in the shoes on the territory of the temple is not allowed. Directly to the altar only Hindus are allowed to approach, but through a small fence and so everything is clearly visible. Sacrifices are performed by specially trained monks, who read mantras and with one blow of an ax, cut off the head of a kid or with a slight movement of the hand, turning the neck of the chicken. Then the meat is baked and eaten by the parishioners on the lawn near the temple.

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, on the most favorable days for beguiling Kali, at the entrance to Dakshinkali a fairly decent line is accumulated, and in October, during the Dasain Festival, it is better not to go to an impressionable tourist: during this period, the greatest number of sacrifices takes place, literally bathe in the blood. But it is worth paying tribute - if you observe Dakshinkali slightly at a distance, when neither animal screaming nor blood smell is heard, this place seems very nice, with a bit of real eastern charm.

How to get to Dakshinkali?
