Planting winter garlic

The guarantee of a good harvest is tireless work and careful preparation. As a rule, active work in the garden begins with the onset of spring, but there are crops, the successful cultivation of which is impossible without preparatory work in the fall. One of these crops is winter garlic. That's what we'll talk about in this article. We will talk about the technology of growing winter garlic from bulbocks and teeth, let's talk about planting winter garlic and describe the most common diseases of this plant.

Winter garlic: cultivation

Preparation of beds for winter garlic is better to start in August-September. Do not forget that on the selected site garlic can be planted no more than once every four years - garlic is very sensitive to the violation of crop rotation. Dig up the bed, then add a few buckets of compost , fresh earth and dolomite flour to avoid soil acidification. If you do not have dolomite flour, you can use wood ash , but make sure that it is clean wood ash, without the impurities of the burnt plastic.

After applying fertilizers, the soil should be re-digged (at the depth of one bayonet bayonet) and carefully leveled using a rake.

Preparation of planting material should be started 8-12 days before planting. To do this, you need to touch all the garlic and separate the heads into separate teeth. Then you need to choose the most beautiful and large denticles. Do not forget to carefully inspect each tooth - it should not be rot, dark spots, cuts or cracks. The bottom of the tooth must be clean and dry.

You can cut a small piece of the upper scales with a knife - after that, the garlic plum will quickly make its way upward. Many housewives prepared dentists put in a common capacity (a bowl will do) and, covered with paper (newspaper), put on the veranda. Thus, garlic undergoes a temperature adaptation and subsequently not only takes root better, but also yields greater yields. After a week of such "rest", garlic is again sorted out, removing rotten and sick teeth.

When to plant winter garlic?

The timing of planting winter garlic varies greatly depending on the growing region. The general rule is that after the landing of winter garlic, warm weather (without frost) should last about 40-45 days, so that garlic has managed to take root well enough, but did not manage to shoot. Not rooted properly, garlic will give a small and poor harvest, and the planted will germinate too early and freeze in winter. According to popular signs to plant garlic on rooting should be before the beginning of the birch leaf fall.

You should not put garlic in the holes deeper than 10 cm - this significantly worsens germination and increases the risk of rotting of garlic. After planting, the garlic beds are leveled and mulched with sawdust, straw or any other available covering material.

There is also a method of growing garlic from bulb - seeds, formed after the rifling and flowering of garlic. The matured and well-dried bulbs are planted at a depth of 1-2 cm with an interval between them about 3 cm. The following year bulb-bulbs grow bulbs, which are very convenient to use as a planting material.

Diseases of winter garlic

  1. Bacteriosis of garlic occurs when the heads are not thoroughly dried, and also if the garlic was dug up too early and did not have time to ripen. Its pathogen is putrefactive bacteria. It appears in the form of dark spots and grooves on the teeth, the teeth of the tooth turn yellow.
  2. Rust of garlic is a fungal disease that affects the tissues of leaves. Especially fast the disease develops in warm weather. The leaves are covered with yellow spots-pimples, which subsequently turn black.
  3. White rot can affect the plant in any period of development or storage. Garlic cloves become loose, watery, the bulb is covered with a white fluffy mushroom. The plant withers and dies very quickly.
