Projectors for home theater - how to choose?

Modern cinemas represent a lot of opportunities to have a great time: a three-dimensional image and sound, a lot of various tricks that create an almost complete illusion of presence, are designed to make watching a movie an unforgettable adventure. But even in spite of all these tricks, today many people prefer home movies. How to choose a projector for home use, to get the home theater effect, we will talk today.

Why do I need a projector in a home theater?

First, let's define, so does a projector in a home theater system? In fact, why spend extra money on its acquisition, if modern TVs have huge diagonals and allow you to get a picture of ultra-high definition? But as it turns out, the projectors have a number of undeniable advantages. First, with their help, you can get an image on a screen of any size. Secondly, the projectors take up little space, and the screen can be easily dismantled at any time. Agree that not everyone can afford to allocate a separate room for a home theater, and in a living room a huge TV set is not always reasonable. Third, as practice shows, watching movies with a projector gives a much smaller load on the eyesight.

Selecting a projector for a home theater

When choosing a projector for your home theater (regardless of budget or HD), it should be noted that their technical specifications contain a lot of special terms, which it is rather difficult to understand without special preparation. Moreover, they are so specific that it is almost impossible to notice the difference between projectors of different types with different characteristics with the naked eye. That is why, to the fore, when choosing such a technique comes, oddly enough, a personal impression of use. In other words, it only makes sense to buy a projector in a specialized store, where it is possible to test it and compare it with several other models in the showroom.

Speaking about the characteristics of projectors, we should pay special attention to the following:

  1. The minimum distance to the screen. By default, projectors for home theater require installation 3-4 meters from the screen. For smaller rooms, you need to purchase short-focus projectors that can be installed 1.5 meters from the screen or projectors with variable focal length.
  2. Brightness of the light flux. This parameter of the projector directly depends on the illumination of the room in which it will be operated. That is, the lighter it will be in the room, the more the brightness should be for the formation of a quality picture. If the room is able to organize an ideal blackout, the projector with a brightness of 800-1200 Lumens will suffice. A universal option for all types of rooms are projectors, which provide an opportunity adjusting the brightness level. They not only give an ideal picture in any conditions, but also significantly save the lamp life.
  3. Contrast. This parameter in projectors is defined as the ratio of the brightness of the most illuminated and the darkest area. The higher the ratio, the better and sharper the image on the screen.
  4. The format of the matrix and the resolution of the image. When choosing a projector for a home theater, it should be borne in mind that only the models that give a picture in high resolution can uncover the full power of modern motion pictures. The matrix in this case should be a 3: 4 or 16: 9 format.
