general information

This Mandir (Hindu temple) is considered the largest on the island . It is located on a rock with a picturesque view of the rice fields and the Indian Ocean. First, Pura Luhur Rambut Sivi was built on the coast, but eventually it was restored and gradually transferred to the top of the mountain .

This was done for the convenience of the pilgrims and for the elevation of the deity. The church is protected by the state and local authorities. They monitor the condition of the structure, the quality of repair and technical work. Thanks to government support, ritual ceremonies are still held here.

The attraction has a beautiful facade and is located near the main road. Balinese, passing through it, always stop near the Pura Luhur Rambut Sivi for receiving blessings and performing religious rites.

History of the temple

Local residents believe that the sacred mystery is kept in the Pura Luhur Rambut Sivi. The name of the site is translated as "a temple where a curl is worshiped". The history of its creation began in the XVI century, when a Hindu priest named Hindu Nirartha (Danghyang Nirartha) stopped here.

The monk traveled the world for a long time, saw many miracles, but it was the locality, 10 km from the Medvevi settlement, that impressed him with its beauty. Before the Elder's gaze the charming landscape opened:

The monk declared this land a saint and began to preach here the word Hindu. When the priest left his halt in a local village, he sacrificed a curl to his grateful aborigines with his hair. In this place the temple Rambut Sivi was built with time.

Description of the shrine

The Hindu temple is a complex of 6 buildings. Some structures are under the mountain, but most are transferred to the top. Here the mandir is surrounded by beautiful gardens and wild nature. The walls of the shrine are decorated with elaborate carvings in the form of trees covered with plumeria and hibiscus flowers.

In Pura Luhur Rambut Sivi, some things of the prophet and his hair are still kept. The attendants of the temple placed them in a special box made of sandalwood and buried inside the main pagoda of the mandir.
