St. Peter's Cathedral (Bandung)

In the heart of the Indonesian city of Bandung is the ancient Catholic Cathedral of St. Peter (Gereja Katedral Santo Petrus Bandung). This is one of the main attractions in the village, which tourists are happy to visit.

general information

The history of the shrine began on June 16, 1895, when the church of St. Francis was built on the site of the modern church. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Bandung administration decided to erect here St. Peter's Cathedral.

It began to be built in 1921. The Dutch architect, Charles Wolf Schumacher, was engaged in the design of the modern church. The structure was built in the Neo-Gothic style, and was sustained in white colors. The consecration of the modern church took place in 1922, on February 19. After 11 years, the Holy See decided to establish an apostolic prefecture here, so in 1932 on April 20 the Catholic Cathedral of St. Peter was given the status of the Cathedral.

What is interesting about the cathedral?

At first sight the temple may seem like a standard building, but if you look closely at it, you can see that the building is lined with artful decor. Inside the church there are comfortable benches for the parishioners, and the vaults of the ceiling are supported by powerful columns.

The most outstanding part of St. Peter's Cathedral is the stained glass window, which decorates the altar. In the center of the church is the sculpture of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which holds Jesus Christ in her arms. It is installed in a special niche and decorated with fragrant flowers.

During the service, priests read sermons to the melodious sounds of the organ. At the entrance to the temple there is a Catholic shop where you can buy religious attributes and books. St. Peter's Cathedral is the only Catholic church in Bandung, so here it is always crowded.

How to get there?

The church is located on Jalan Merdeka Street, surrounded by skyscrapers, which are the main landmark (although they somewhat interfere with the perception of the strict beauty of the temple). You can get here by Jl. Rakata and Jl. Tera, Jl. Natuna or Jl. LLRE Martadinata. If you decide to go by public transport , then take the bus to the center.
