One of the most interesting and exciting natural sites in Kenya is the Thompson Waterfall. This beautiful water cascade is considered the largest in East Africa and one of the largest on the entire African continent.
History of discovery
The first discoverer of the Thompson waterfall is the Scottish explorer Joseph Thompson. This is the first European who managed to overcome the difficult path from Mombasa to Lake Victoria . During the trip in 1883, a geologist and naturalist first saw this beautiful Kenyan waterfall and named it after his father.
Features of the waterfall
Thompson's picturesque waterfall is part of the Iwaso Nyiro river, which tends down from the Aberdan ridge. The waterfall is at an altitude of 2360 meters above sea level, and its own height is more than 70 meters.
Thompson's waterfall is the "breadwinner" of most families in the city of Nyahururu. Many members of local families work as guides, translators or sellers in souvenir shops, that's why tourists are always welcome here. In turn, tourists come to the Thompson Waterfall in order to:
- Enjoy the beauty of the Aberdare Park ;
- to observe the water flows of the waterfall;
- go down to the foot of the waterfall;
- Look at the huge number of hippos that live upstream of the Thompson Falls.
The incredibly beautiful landscapes of Thompson's waterfall were captured in Alan Grint's film "The Agatha Christie's Detectives: The Gentleman in Brown" (1988). Not far from the landmark is the Thomson Falls Lodge, which originally served as a private residence, and later opened for visitors.
On the way to the Thompson waterfall, you can find a large number of shops where you can buy souvenirs with images of attractions, as well as products made of wood and stones.
How to get there?
Thompson Waterfall in Kenya is located near the city of Nyahururu on the plateau of Lakipia. To get to it is easier from the city of Nakuru , located just 65 km. Tourists are not recommended to go to the waterfall on their own, as there is a good chance to meet with local robbers.
